John raises the bar at nationals

A CHANGE of scenery has not halted the momentum of former Rockhampton-based weightlifter John Walz.

Walz, 18, has his sights on Australian University selection after leading the Queensland team to victory at last month's national championships in Melbourne.

The Queensland captain, now based in Brisbane, won the 94kg bodyweight division, lifting 112.5kg in the snatch lift.

Walz, who won gold at this year's Youth Olympics, broke the Queensland under-18 and under-20 men's clean and jerk records with a 150kg lift.

He won the trophy for best performance by a male lifter across all bodyweight divisions.

He will now focus on the World University titles in France in July.
