Johnston sets high goal in farewell game

By AARON KELLY

DAWSON Valley Drover Joel Johnston is preparing for his final mission before waving goodbye to the Rockhampton and District Rugby Union (RDRU) Agrade competition this weekend Johnston, 23, will play his last game for Dawson Valley against University at Rockhampton's Rugby Park today.

The Queensland Country star returns to the United Kingdom next week where he will link with Southend in the National Division Three competition.

Johnston, also the RDRU development officer, is looking forward to a "warmer'' reception this time around after being on the Australian Universities tour of the UK in January.

"At least we get to warm up ? it was freezing last time,'' he said.

However, Johnston has one last goal against University today, with Drovers needing a bonuspoint win to keep their hopes for a top-two finish alive.

"It's a lot easier rather than playing sudden-death for three weeks,'' Johnston said.

"We did that last year and we were burnt out by the final.'' Helping Dawson Valley's winning cause is the fact the club is finally at full-strength for the first time this season.

Johnston will join Southend's pre-season trials starting next month before a September season kick-off.

Points ? Colts 46, University 42, Dawson Valley 38, Brothers 30, Frenchville Pioneers 19.

Round 14 (July 30) ? Brothers v Frenchville Pioneers (Ryan Park), Dawson Valley v University (Rugby Park), Colts bye.
