Junior touch finals heat up

HOT and humid weather greeted players when they turned out to compete in the Rockhampton Touch Association's junior grand finals at Cyril Connell Fields last weekend.

A total of 60 games were played, starting on Friday night with the under-13 and under-15 boys and girls finals, followed by under-8 and under-10 mixed and under-12 boys, girls and mixed finals on Saturday morning.

In the under-13 division one competition, St Anthony's Crusaders secured a 3-1 win over Magpies in the boys game, while the girls final was won by RPM 05, who were the firm favourites for the title after going through the season undefeated.

The under-15 boys division one final went down to a nail-biting dropoff finish, with Your Man narrowly defeating Emmaus Buckaneers 4-3.

Experience was the key to success in the under-15 girls division one final, with Sugar Babies outclassing Sunny Girls with a try-scoring blitz, winning the game 9-0.

The Magpies junior club had a successful day on Saturday, winning the under-10 and under-12 boys titles, under-8 and under-10 mixed titles, and under-10 girls title.

A hat-trick of tries from Jessica Powell won the game for Joey's Firecats in the under-12 girls final, defeating St Anthony's Roxys 3-2, while in the under-12 mixed final, experienced Wandal St Joey Giants secured a 5-3 win over Allies.

The junior touch summer competition now has a break until later next year.

A record number of teams once again played in this year's competition.
