Lifesavers build contest experience by the mile
ROCKHAMPTON'S Matt Urquhart and Codey Lee are hitting the road in the name of surf lifesaving success.
The former Emu Park club members signed up with Maroochydore in October this year to broaden their competition experience against tougher competitors.
Finishing work at Friday lunch or afternoon, driving to Maroochydore, competing on the weekend and returning home on the Sunday afternoon, or night, is not for everyone.
However, it is not a tough choice for Urquhart.
"Once you start asking yourself why you're doing this then you have to look at the big picture.''
Organisation is the key ? balancing work, training, travel and competition.
Urquhart and Lee are in Maroochydore for patrols this weekend and hit the road again next weekend for round two of the XXXX Gold Premiership Series at Kawana Waters.
Urquhart, 20, is a surf ski specialist while Lee, 19, is chasing success on the board.
At Emu Park Urquhart was limited to the single ski, but he can now also compete in double, mixed and ski relays with more open competitors at Maroochydore.
"I was thinking I can't come here (south Queensland) for one race and hope to get into the finals,'' Urquhart said.
"Last season was my first year in open, I was coming off a good year in under-19s, but my first open year was disheartening.''
Urquhart is determined to make the national ski finals at Kurrawa in March.
