Lights to help traffic cope

THE busy roundabout at the intersection of Main and Alexandra streets, North Rockhampton, will be replaced with traffic lights.

Rockhampton City Council received $140,000 funding from the Federal Government's Blackspot Program for the project.

Works committee chair Cr Greg Belz said 7000 cars used the roundabout every day.

He said the small roundabout was never designed to handle that much traffic and could not cope.

Cr Belz said the traffic lights would reduce accidents, waiting times and driver frustration. Work on the project started last week and will finish in late June.
