Locals invited to the table

TWO Rockhampton table tennis players have gained men's state selection after the city finished runner-up at the Queensland Senior Championships in Cairns.

The team of Colin McKenna, Damon Clarke and Joel Coughlan, seeded second, lost 6-3 in the team's final against top-seeds Wynnum on Sunday.

McKenna and Clarke earned state selection.

"We would have loved to have beaten the top seeds,'' Clarke said yesterday on his way home from the championships.

"It could have gone either way.

"We lost two sets 11-9 in the fifth which is about as close as it gets.''

In the singles, McKenna bowed out in the semifinal to eventual winner Steven Gao, while Clarke lost his quarter final to Jose De Leon.

McKenna finished third in the tournament order of merit, Clarke fifth and Coughlan seventh.
