Lone vehicle left a wreck, woman dies
The accident happened about 11.50am on the Bruce Highway, 15km south of Marlborough.
Crumpled wreckage was all that was left of the vehicle.
The driver's side door was torn away and the windscreen smashed into the front section of the vehicle.
Shattered glass littered the highway and debris from the vehicle was strewn across the verge.
The four-wheel-drive was packed with belongings, including what appeared to be a child's bike.
Personal items were scattered several metres across the long grass next to the highway.
Yesterday afternoon police had the grim job of telling her husband of the accident.
The woman's name had not been released last night. She died at the scene.
Police from Marlborough and Rockhampton had to stop traffic as they closed the Bruce Highway for three hours.
They then started to direct traffic around the crash site, and moved quickly to clear shattered glass.
Both lanes of the highway were re-opened at 3pm.
Police said they did not know what caused the accident and were investigating.
Police have urged Central Queensland motorists to take care towards the festive season, especially when travelling long distances.
