Mackay loss may be Comets? gain

THE Central Comets will remain the Central Queensland region's sole representation in the 2006 Wizard Queensland Cup.

In yesterday's announcement of teams eligible to play in next year's statewide rugby league competition the Comets were included, however, Mackay's application was thrown out with the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) retaining the same 11-team com-petition.

The decision eases pressure on the Comets which will now avoid competing in the player recruitment ranks with Mackay.

The Rockhampton-based Comets, ready to enter the 2006 season under the guidance of new coach Matt Parish, views a slight player recruitment opening with Mackay's ommission.

The Comets hope to increase the club's strength in the outside backs department.
