Mt Archer area in firing line

A LIVE-IN caretaker could be appointed at the Mount Archer picnic area to help keep vandals at bay.

Rockhampton City Councillor John Broad will tonight ask the council to look at the possibility of introducing a kiosk/canteen facility at the popular recreational venue.

The move comes after vandals last week smashed everything they could inside the toilet block, causing an estimated $1500 worth of damage.

The council has lost count of the number of times the area has been targeted.

Following the latest attack, last Wednesday night/Thursday morning, Cr Broad said the erection of a gate and enforcing a total night-time lockout was an option.

But for that to happen, the council would have to find someone, possibly nearby residents, to volunteer to open and close it at dawn and dusk. So far nobody has come forward.

"We were hoping we would get someone indicating they would help us out,'' Cr Broad said.

He said he would raise the issue during general business at tonight's council meeting.

"I'll be asking for a report (to be prepared) on the potential of a kiosk or canteen facility.''

Cr Broad said live-in caretakers appointed at two local parks had curbed vandalism problems there.

"It's proven to be the best thing we've ever done.
