New Dash 8 flies faster

THE new Dash 8 aircraft to service increased flights from Rockhampton to Brisbane would be faster than Jetstar's Boeing 717 jet, Mayor Margaret Strelow said.

Cr Strelow made the comment at Monday night's city council meeting after Cr Rose Swadling said she was concerned about changes to Qantas' services to Rockhampton.

QantasLink will increase its Dash 8 services from June 1 with an extra 28 weekly services to Rockhampton, replacing the daily 737 flights and bringing the total of weekly services to 67.

Jetstar will also drop from two daily returns to one with its Boeing 717 service.

Cr Swadling said she was worried there would be a drop in standard.

Cr Strelow said the new Dash 8 aircraft, while smaller than the Boeing 717, was actually faster, and would make the Brisbane trip in 55 minutes.

"While it's unfortunate we will lose the jet service, the new Dash 8 is a big improvement on the old Dash 8,'' she said.

Airport committee chairman Cr Jim Webber said the new Dash 8 would not be available until late in the year. The old Dash 8 takes 90 minutes to Brisbane and the boeing jet 65 minutes.
