Off to London to play in league

By RACHAEL BORICH

FORMER Rockhampton junior basketballer Biancia Abbott is willing to travel to help further her basketball career.

Abbott leaves Australia tomorrow to join the London Heathrow Acers division one women's basketball team in the EBL (England Basketball League).

This league is a complete unknown for Abbott who will mainly use the opportunity to keep fit during the off-season and, hopefully, get in some travel.

"It was a huge decision,'' Abbott said.

"I've heard nothing about this league and I've never seen any of the teams play.''

One player she does know is former Rockhampton and Hervey Bay team-mate Kylie Power.

Abbott, 23, faced a big decision for her off-season plans after another strong showing in her second season for the Hervey Bay Hurricanes in the QABL Southern Cross division last season.

The 184cm forward joined the Hurricanes after a long stint with the Rockhampton QABL women's team.

An increased focus on fitness and responsibility is opening new doors for Abbott who was also invited to train with the WNBL Adelaide Lightning program ? a club which is keen to keep a close eye on Abbott's off-season progress.

The EBL season starts on September 17 and the finals wrap up in April.
