Our female veterans stand out

THE city's leading female veteran players were outstanding at last weekend's Queensland Veteran Championships at Mackay. Pam Clarke teamed with Monica Deeth to win the gold medal in the over-40 State teams event.

In the individual events Clarke won the over-50 women's singles over Brisbane's Ha Cheung in straight sets.

Clarke also made the final of the over-40 singles, bowing out to top seed Andrea McDonnell while she partnered McDonnell to win the women's doubles over Deeth and O'Sullivan. Clarke and Wynnum's Paul Green lost their mixed doubles final.

Next weekend Joel Coughlan, 16, goes to Melbourne and some of Rockhampton's other leading players are in Bundaberg.

Coughlan will play at one of the nation's premier carnivals in the Victoria Open Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Albert Park ? playing under-18 events.

Meanwhile, entries are still to be finalised for the Bundaberg Open Championships on Saturday and Sunday and will include graded and age events. Colin McKenna and Damon Clarke should figure in top grade while Dane Coughlan and Scott Headon want to impress.

Dave Hockings and Pam Clarke should prove solid in the veterans while Clarke should do well in open events. Jason, Paula and David Hockings will contest the junior and lower grades.
