Our marathon man

YEPPOON'S David Cundy is buzzing with pride and excitement as he prepares to take on the world's best masters marathon runners.
Cundy, 56, will run in the 55-59 years division in the 42km race on September 3 at the World Masters Athletics Championships in San Sebastian, in northern Spain.
"I'll be on the start line with all these people that have been running most of their lives and don't go along unless they're serious ? if they're not there they're probably injured,'' Cundy said.
Racing against a top-class field and testing humidity, Cundy hopes to cover the flat course in about 2 hours and 48 minutes.
His personal-best marathon time was 2 hours and 53 minutes in the Gold Coast marathon last year.
Every runner in Spain will be on their own mission ? Cundy's is like every other race.
"It's all about PBs (personal best times) for me, not so much as winning races,'' he said.
Cundy last competed at the World Masters level four years ago in Brisbane where he placed 10th in the 10,000m (35.41) and secured a top 13 finish in his 5000m event (17.20).
He was debating whether to run in both the marathon and 10,000m in Spain this year, but has channelled all his energy into the marathon.
