Over 450 at Town, Country tennis carnival

? ROCKHAMPTON is fast becoming the tennis captial of Australia. More than 450 players ? social and serious ? will converge on the Victoria Park tennis courts this weekend for the 81st Town and Country Teams Carnival.

This year's carnival, the biggest teams event in Queensland annually, has attracted 73 teams from as far away as Canberra, Brisbane, Longreach and Darwin.

"It's a very popular event,'' Rockhampton Tennis Association secretary Paul Bampton said yesterday. "They come from near and far to play in it.''

On the back of this month's hugely successful Rockhampton Open Championships and with junior numbers sky-rocketing, the sport of tennis is enjoying a resurgence in Central Queensland.
