By TAMARA KEMP

YEPPOON's main beach turned into an explosive party on Saturday night to mark the start of the Yeppoon Tropical Pinefest celebrations for 2005.

More than 1000 packed the main beach to grab the best spot to admire the 15-minute fireworks display and an intense four hours of entertainment.

Organiser and Livingstone Shire Councillor Brian Dorey described the event as a magical night.

"The launch of Pinefest this year is definitely better than last year,'' he said.

"Centenarian and skydiver 101-year-old Billy Adams opened the ceremony and the Coast Guard fired off two flares to start up the magnificent fireworks.''

Cr Dorey said the Pinefestivities were set to continue throughout the week with the Southcorp wines and cheese public opening of "Window into Rail Industry and Wine'' tonight from 7.30.

From 5pm on FridayYeppoon's main street (James Street) will come alive with local bands, street entertainers, puppets, magic and jugglers at the Elders Yeppoon Nightfest Street Carnival.

The Seaspray Mardi Gras and Sun N Funfest will light up the street again on Sunday from 9am with a street parade, competitions, entertainment and Pineapple Olympics.
