Police rule out sex attack links

POLICE have ruled out a connection between a sexual assault at Farnborough Beach on Sunday and a brutal rape in Rockhampton last Christmas Eve.

On Sunday a 58-year-old woman on holidays was attacked about 10am while walking near the Barwells Creek end of Farnborough Beach.

A comfit picture of the alleged perpetrator was released earlier this week which bears a strikingly similar resemblance to a comfit picture released after a 26- year-old woman was brutally raped in a Joiner Street home, North Rockhampton, on Christmas Eve.

An arrest was never made after the Christmas Eve assault.

Yeppoon police Criminal Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Detective Sergeant Andrew Broadfoot said he had spoken to the Rockhampton CIB about whether a man who allegedly raped a woman at Joiner Street was the same man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 58-year-old woman at Farnborough Beach.

"At this stage we do not believe they are connected,'' he said.

The man suspected of assaulting the 58-year-old tourist is still at large. He is described as being about 48 years of age, 177cm tall, a tanned caucasian with a slim or wiry build and brown sandy coloured hair.

Anyone in the area at the time of the attack is being urged to contact Yeppoon police on 4939?1400 or Crime Stoppers on 1800?333?000.
