Poms have nothing to whinge about

ENGLISH sports fans will take any opportunity to gloat after any victory over any Australian sporting team.

At 6.45am yesterday, after England's cricketers won the Ashes, some English fans made a dawn raid to proudly raise the Union Jack, St George and England flags alongside an Australian Boxing Kangaroo flag ? at half-mast ? at the Rocky Car Wash on Rockhampton's Musgrave Street.

They thought it was the least they could do after some friendly banter over the past weeks.

England supporter Gary Jeffreys, of Rockhampton, who was involved in the car wash's construction, was grateful to the business's owners, Derek Mayne and Ken Sewell, for getting into the spirit of things.

"We don't beat Australia too often so we like to enjoy it and savour the moment when we do,'' Jeffreys said.

Don't expect the English fanfare to disappear quickly ? yesterday they were still gloating about England's World Cup rugby victory in 2003.

"Who knows what's next?'' Jeffreys said.
