Pony club riders win swag of medals

A LOT of hard work goes into preparing horses and riders for a major event and therefore it makes everything worthwhile to return home with a wide range of titles as did a group of local youngsters recently.

Former Zone 27 president Col Austin, who has over 40 years' experience with pony club at Rockhampton, was very proud of the groups' effort claiming it to be the best results achieved by his zone at a State carnival.

The riders are the pick from the Capricornia area. Apart from returning a swag of individual awards they also came back with a first zone team at both dressage and combined training and a second placing in the horse trial event.

"We sent 25 riders and most of them came back with something,'' Mr Austin said.

Team member Kirstie Fossett said it was a great team effort in which there were a number of terrific personal contributions.

" Bonnie (Price) went particularly well to gain two gold and a silver medal,'' she said.

"We dominated things up there, we were the zone everybody wanted to beat.''

Kirstie, who has been competing since 1998, said the whole team was excited with the results but now many of them hope to move on to the next level.

"I'm now aiming to make the nationals,'' she said.

"This event was the first part of the selection criteria for the nationals at Toowoomba.

"We are all excited as they only come up every two years.
