Prized car taken and destroyed
THIEVES torched Rockhampton cerebral palsy sufferer Ben Madigan's prized car on the weekend.
Yesterday, Mr Madigan, who spent countless hours working on his treasured VL Commodore pouring thousands of dollars into it, vowed not to let the latest in a string of thefts get him down.
The 19-year-old had registered the car for only two weeks after spending more than 15 months doing it up, when crooks broke into his North Rockhampton home on the weekend and stole it.
It was found torched at the top of Mount Archer early Monday. Yesterday, Ben's mum Kathy Mertin said her son "has no luck with wheels''.
"When he was a kid he had three pushbikes stolen,'' Ms Mertin said.
"Then when he turned 18 he had a VM Commodore which someone stole and smashed up on a joyride when he was visiting family at Blackwater.
"And now this. That car was his baby .?.?. he would even sleep with the keys in a pocket.''
The car was insured.
The theft is one of the most recent in a spike in the number of stolen cars in Rockhampton that are later torched.
On the weekend four cars were stolen from Advanced Exhausts on Musgrave Street ? two were found burnt-out.
