Qld champions finally

NOT even two teammates landing each other in hospital could stop the North Rockhampton State High School girls softball team from finally winning the top prize.

Scenes of elation poured out when North Rockhampton won the 2005 Australia Post Golden Gloves Challenge girls State title with a 15-9 win over the Aldridge/Sunshine Beach team in Brisbane last weekend.

It had been a long wait for three of the team's Year 12 students.

Carina Fullelove, Tamie-Lee Hansen and Melanie Beal first played this competition as Year 8 students and have played in four finals series since.

Ashleigh Coome was the team's other finalyear player. Hansen (centre field) and Jacquelyn Mitchell (short stop) made early exits.

With North Rockhampton leading 15-5 the pair crashed into each other contesting a fly ball in the outfield and were taken to hospital by ambulance for precautionary measures. They were cleared of serious injury.

In the boys division, Rockhampton State High School finished their finals campaign in third place with a win over St Mary's (9-3), a draw against Mt Isa Catholic High School (8-8) and a loss to Cleveland (16-0).
