Racing appetites whet at Bluff

WHILE it bucketed down on the Capricorn Coast earlier this week, out at Bluff racecourse yesterday afternoon, the water cart was being put to good use in preparation for today's five-race meeting.

Bluff's Aaron McLaughlin summed it up succinctly when re- plying to the question of "how much rain fell at the course earlier this week''.

"Not a drop. Actually, we could do with a shower. We have the water cart out on the track now'', McLaughlin said at 4pm.

For Bluff-Blackwater racing aficionados, today's five-race card will be a highlight featuring the first of the $7000 heats of the Craiglea/Raheeh Studs/Marr's Beef and Coal Series which is listed as a Class 3 (1000m).

Bluff racing will also be beamed on the national stage dur- ing a segment of Sky Racing's "Off The Beaten Track'', hosted by yours truly which will centre around today's meeting.

Top jockey Dale Evans goes race riding at Bluff hot on the heels of a winning Rockhampton double on Thursday as will in- form Darryl Johnston and Donna Carrigg with that pair out to finance some weighty stewards fines issued at Callaghan Park. Johnston was fined $100 for an overweight misdemeanour on Thursday with Carrigg copping $200 for failing to claim her full allowance to her declared riding weight.

Visiting Mackay jockey David Lloyd was also sent home $200 lighter for being too heavy.
