Rockhampton hitting into Easter with open carnival

ENTRIES are being finalised for the annual Rockhampton Open Championships at the Leichhardt Park Table Tennis Centre this weekend.

The feature of the carnival is the Bernies Pies lightning team's tournament across all grades.

Teams matches will be played on Friday afternoon and Saturday while individual events for graded and age divisions hit-off on Saturday evening and extend through Sunday.

Men's and women's singles finals are scheduled to start at 7pm.

For the first time events are being held specifically for athletes with disabilities, including intellectually disabled and wheelchair sections.

Pre-season fixtures ended for all grades during the week. In the top section of open grade Joel Coughlan and Craig Pettett won the flag by three points over Colin McKenna and Christoph Leitner.

Second division was decided by count-back with Erica Nolan and Mark Payne winning over Monica Deeth and Linda O'Sullivan.

Jeffrey Jordan and Andrew Kunst won the top section of the Monday night fixtures.

The second division was won by Mickey Udompol and Jason Warr ahead of juniors Zach Coughlan and Jason Hockings.

New seasons in all competitions start after the Easter break. Rockhampton provided the backbone of the State men's team at the Australian Youth Championships in Victoria this week.

Dane Coughlan and Scott Headon are in the 20 years and under men's division with Wynnum's Martin Mallon.
