Rocky High in Aust athletics series final

ROCKHAMPTON State High School students have qualified for the national finals in the IGA Schools Knockout Competition in Sydney on December 13.

In the first year Central Queensland schools have been invited to compete in the three-round series, Rockhampton State High's senior women's team qualified for the next round of the cup division while the school's junior boys and girls teams qualified in the plate competition.

The senior women's team could be unavailable for the Sydney round.

Rockhampton's senior boys team only missed out on the finals by three points.

Leading into the final event, Rockhampton was disqualified in the relay for a faulty changeover.

They got no points and finished in third with Townsville's Kirwin and Pimlico schools tied for first.

Rockhampton athletes regularly brought home the field in the Townsville events.

Zoe Clews won her 200m hurdles and triple jump events, Ray Garrett won his 200m hurdles and placed second in the 100m while Libby Tweed won her triple jump and finished second in her 400m event.

Other first place getters were Curtis Taylor (200m hurdles), Ashley Hennegan (1500m), Alex Beitzel (discus), Nicole Barker (200m hurdles), Nathan Taylor (high jump), Ross Baeffal (long jump) and Wedney Pickering (shot put).
