Roo beheading sign of future serial killer
THE HORRIFIC beheading of a kangaroo at the Rockhampton Zoo has left staff shaken and suspicious of a serial animalkiller.
The body of an 18-month-old decapitated joey was discovered on Sunday morning. The head was later found in the koala sanctuary.
The animal's neck, ear and tongue were severed.
"We are dreading finding these other parts,'' said zoo coordinator Simon Walton.
"The animal was tortured before it died.''
A few weeks before the kangaroo was killed, it and a few animals had been nursed back to health by zoo staff.
Mr Walton said he was now unsure of the reason for their illness.
"The three kangaroos had become ill at the same time,'' he said. "We are now wondering if they were poisoned.''
He also said it was important for people to speak up if they had any information.
"In five years time this person may be killing people,'' he said.
Psychologist Alan Keen agrees.
He said research had shown there was a close link between animal cruelty and domestic violence, especially in the case of serial killers.
"This is often a starting point for further aggressive behaviour,'' he said.
Police are investigating the incident.
