Rowers enjoy stroke of good weather

THE SUN came out for Australia's best rowers to bask in glory on the Fitzroy River at the weekend.

The 50-strong Australian squad hit the water in preparations for this month's world championships, starting on August 28 in Gifu, Japan.

Competing in the Grammarians Rowing Club regional regatta, the national crews raced against each other in handicap events.

Rowing Australia assistant manager Ray Ebert said despite some windy conditions on Saturday morning, it was a perfect start to the team's 11-day training camp in Rockhampton.

"Today is the reason why we came here ? the conditions have been perfect,'' Ebert said.

The Australian contingent will be officially welcomed by the Rockhampton City Council this afternoon.
