Rugby star?s itch to travel
By AARON KELLY
ROCKHAMPTON rugby union star Zach Jones has caught the travel bug, but his footy gear is packed for the journey.
Jones leaves Australia on September 20 to join the Galbally Rugby Football Club in Ireland.
The 22-year-old is heading abroad on a winning note after helping Colts to this year's Rockhampton and District Rugby Union (RDRU) premiership double.
Jones said he was always planning to travel this year and admitted there were some mixed emotions during last month's grand final celebrations.
"It was good to take it out in both grades,'' Jones said.
"At the end of the game I thought to myself, 'Why am I going?' but it's a good opportunity to play rugby and see the world.''
It's been a rapid rise for the towering forward who took up the sport only three years ago to improve his social life.
Jones plans to play and travel for about three years and hopes to take in the 2007 World Cup in France.
"I don't know what to expect, but I'm looking forward to it.''
The Rockhampton representative was picked up by the Irish club after he stumbled across a player-management service on the internet and he joins former Rockhampton players Andrew Pearce and Derrick Galbin in Ireland.
