Sabot winner a natural sailor

BALLINA'S Nick Peate is finding sailing a breeze.

Peate, 15, won the one-up division at the 42nd Australian National Sabot Championships on Keppel Bay off Yeppoon yesterday sailing Material Girl.

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron club member won with the final heat unable to be raced yesterday, after officials cancelled racing with winds gusting over 28 knots.

Peate has only been sailing for about 20 months and was last year's Sabot Week winner in Hobart. This was his first appearance at the national level and he is proving a natural ? with no family connections to the sport.

He only became involved after a friend asked him out for a sail and he went from there.

The two-up division winners were Northern NSW Sailing Association's Matthew Graham and his crew, and cousin, Vardon Robson winning back-to-back championships aboard Double Black.
