Salvaged negatives bring positive relief

WHILE most people were winding down from their working week on Friday night, Dawn and Noel Barker were frantically rescuing thousands of photographic negatives from their studio.

At 8.22 on Friday night, the couple's plans to relax changed after finding out from emergen- cy services the back of Star Stu- dios, Musgrave Street, North Rockhampton, was in flames.

Mrs Barker said her mind could not be put to rest until she knew the thousands of photos, dating as far back as 1968, were in safe hands.

They pulled up outside the studio to the smell of smoke and ash from the back of the building. Fortunately, not a negative was touched.

"We were lucky not to have lost anything, but it's very infu- riating that we have to spend this extra time cleaning up,'' she said.

"When we come into the shop tomorrow, I think I will just leave the answering machine on because it will take about a week to have everything in order.''

Mrs Barker said fire had caused damage to the back room of the studio rendering the studio useless.
