Schwarten gains leadership role

MEMBER for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten is the Leader of the House ? in the Queensland Parliament, that is.

Premier Peter Beattie yesterday asked Mr Schwarten to take the third most senior position in the Labor Government after former Deputy Premier Terry Mackenroth resigned on Monday.

Mr Schwarten said he had not asked to be elevated to the Leader of the House position.

"Nothing is going to change and as I said to the Premier, I would take the job as long as it would not take me out of Rockhampton,'' he said.

Mr Schwarten's new role makes him responsible for ensuring the Government's legislation is passed through the Parliament.

"While I will have more responsibility, it won't mean any change in terms of my family. I don't want to spend any more time away than what I am doing,'' he said.

Mr Schwarten will replace Anna Bligh, who has become Deputy Premier.
