Shaw catches ride to festival

? THERE is no place like home for former Rockhampton surfer Oliver Shaw.

Shaw, now based on the Gold Coast ? one of the world's surfing capitals, will return home to defend his title at this year's The Rock Yeppoon Surfing Festival on the Capricorn Coast.

The Surfing Queensland event hits Farnborough Beach on April 1 and 2 and already it looks set to once again showcase the surfing talent in the region following the success of last year's inaugural festival.

"Last year people were excited that a surfing competition can be such a social weekend,'' Surfing Queensland's Mark Winson said.

"This year we're expecting to be flooded with entries from local surfers keen to get out there and have some fun,'' For people who cannot surf, that is no excuse.

Capricorn Coast Learn 2 Surf will host free surfing lessons for both male and females.

Like last year, the festival will also incorporate live commentary, high-tech computer scoring with live scores, onbeach music and entertaining surfing.

Competitors can choose from a number of divisions including both long and short boards events.
