She?s got a Decent chance in Brisbane

VALUABLE Rockhampton mare She's Decent will be out to add to her stud value when she contests the $50,000 Country Cup (1200m) at Eagle Farm, Brisbane, on Saturday.

She's Decent became an automatic qualifier for the feature contest through an authoritative win in the $12,000 Country Cup Series Heat (1200m) staged at Callaghan Park racecourse last Friday.

Carrying 57kg, She's Decent displayed impressive acceleration over the final 250 metres to win by a half-length from Stipend.

On Saturday the Encosta de Lago mare drops 0.5kg in what does not seem an overly strong field.

Country Cup topweight belongs to another Rockhampton sprinter in Victory Siren who has been declared a runner at the eight-race Rockhampton Jockey Club card today.

Nessuno, the star stablemate of She's Decent, is likely to concentrate on Brisbane for his future race assignments. "I'll nominate him for a 1200 metres race at Eagle Farm on August 7,'' trainer John Wigginton said.

"The bigger stretches should suit him better there than at Doomben.''

Wigginton was referring to the $100,000 Avitt Quality Handicap.

Nessuno produced an eye-catching effort at Doomben last Saturday with the closest of seconds over 1010 metres.

Wigginton's plans for Nessuno herald a change in direction as originally the sprinter was being aimed for a back-toback winning tilt at the $75,000 Cleveland Bay Handicap (1200m) at Townsville on July 28.

"In the end, given the likely weight and better Brisbane option, I didn't even bother entering him for the Cleveland Bay,'' Wigginton said.

Another first class Rockhampton sprinter in Western Brace is on the recovery list after sustaining a suspensory ligament injury and an infection.

Trainer Kath Mylne is hopeful of a complete recovery and a return to racing by the flamboyant galloper later this year. The funeral for Alan Unwin will be held in Rockhampton today at 10am. Alan attained legendary status as a trackwork rider in Brisbane.

A member of one of Queensland bestknown racing families and a victim of the scourge of cancer, Alan's funeral is expected to be attended by a large cross-section of Queensland's racing industry.

Meanwhile, the Gladstone Turf Club has drawn a wonderful response from trainers for Saturday's Newmarket Handicap (1194m) race meeting.

From an entry of 14, the Newmarket field is headed by Bundaberg galloper Grouchie Pattern on 59kg.
