Softball lads step up to the state plate

THE Rockhampton under-19 men's softball team is hoping to break a three-year jinx when it hits the state titles in Brisbane this weekend.

Sending a strong team, Rockhampton is determined to not make it a fourth straight year of finishing in third place.

Rockhampton is fielding an unchanged team from last year with the inclusion of under-16's David Morgan and Matt Shields.

Both are on the under-16 state squad.

The team includes seven players in the 2005 state squad with Chris Baxter, Jeffrey Dwyer, Daniel Wordley and Shields out there to impress selectors with their pitching ability.

In the batters box, Timm Ackers, Ryan Beal and Dwyer will be searching for runs, especially against some tough opposition in Redlands and Mt Isa.

Rockhampton face Mackay, Redlands and Wynnum first up on Friday followed by games against Ipswich, Mt Isa, Hervey Bay, Caboolture and Toowoomba before the semi-finals start on Sunday.

The team is being coached by Luke Waters, a former Queensland representative player.
