Spiders, snakes and a rat
AFTER being lost and wandering the bush on Mount Archer for six hours, David West, 14, and Mac Marshall, 13, were glad they had a mobile phone.
About 10.30am Saturday the two friends went for a walk up the track posted First Turkey.
Heading off on what they thought would be a fun walk the two soon found the path overgrown and bushy, then like "dense rainforest'' with giant spiders, snakes and an oversized dead rat.
David said he did not really know he was lost, because he did not know how long the path was, he only became concerned when they came to a fork in the track with no directions on which way to go.
"We stuck to the track,'' David said, "but I think we changed tracks somewhere.''
At the fork David used his mobile phone to call his mum, Marianne, to let her know he was on the moun- tain and would be there for a while.
"I wanted him to turn around and go back,'' she said.
David's gut feeling was to go forward: "It was too bushy to be really sure where we had been,'' he said. It was about 3pm.
So with just under a litre of water between them they continued up the mountain.
When they came out of the dense forest and were able to see the view, David and Mac realised they had walked around to the other side of Mt Archer.
Eventually they came across a marker and David put in a call to his mum to let her know.
When the two made it to the top they called a final time, drank the water and waited for a lift down.
