State champs prove winning is all attitude

By RACHAEL BORICH

A YOUNG group of Rockhampton touch players and parents has won the hearts of others.

Winning the under-11 boys title at the Junior State Cup at the Glasshouse Mountains this month has been and gone, but you wouldn't have known watching these boys work through training drills and running around at Rockhampton's Cyril Connell Fields this week ? you can't wipe the smiles off their faces.

"You'd think they'd won an Olympic gold medal,'' under-11 coach John Tapsell said on the players' and parents' reaction after their 4-2 win over the Gold Coast in the grand final.

Rockhampton's Australian open men's team representative Gavin Shuker was amazed at these young players' dedication after taking them for their final training run.

"They played a practice game against an under-13s team and I've never seen so many people watching a game of touch in Rockhampton ? parents were lined up on the sideline cheering,'' Shuker said.
