Surprised by Rocky?s volleyball upstarts

ROCKHAMPTON surprise packets Robbie Kuhn and Clint Rayner have upstaged their more fancied rivals in round five of the Vodafone Queensland Beach Volleyball Tour at Great Keppel Island.

Starting the tournament ranked outsiders, the teenage Rockhampton pairing hit the jackpot in the $5000 event, winning a bronze medal in the men's division after an upset 1618 21-19 12-9 win over No.3 seeds, the Gold Coast's Chris Harris and Nathan Gathercole, yesterday.

Reigning series champion, the Gold Coast's Shanon Zunker, combined with Brisbane's Sean Thomas to win the men's title.

The top seeds crushed Gold Coast duo Graham Wilson and Isaac Kappa, formerly of Rockhampton, 23-21 18-10 in the gold medal play-off.

Former Olympian Annette Hygens-Tholen and Brisbane's Shelley Nye struck gold in the women's final.

The top seeds overpowered close rivals, No.2 seeds Alana Biggam and Katie Sharpe, both of Brisbane, 18-10 14-18 12-5.
