Syringe bandit robs family store

A SYRINGE-wielding man held up Fry's Convenience Store during peak-hour trade yesterday.

Police were searching Rockhampton last night for the man who threatened staff at the Lakes Creek Road store about 4.15pm.

Rockhampton police Detective Senior Sergeant Graham Richards said the man entered the store with his face disguised.

"He demanded property, and at the time of making demands, he was armed with a syringe,'' he said.

"As a result of those demands he has obtained some property from the store.''

As of last night, the offender was still at large.

Detective Senior Sergeant Richards said the store's staff were shaken by the event, but were helping the investigation.

People continued to try to enter the store, unaware of what had happened moments before, but were turned away by police to protect evidence.

The store was closed for more than an hour and customers told the store was closed because of a technical problem.

The Morning Bulletin saw some customers fueling their cars, only to be told the store was closed and to go on their way.

The man, a caucasian, was last seen running along Lakes Creek Road, and was believed to be wearing a spray jacket.

Anyone with information should contact Rockhampton Police on 4932 1500 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
