Tannum surf lifesaving crew chases title

? THIS is the open water chal- lenge the Tannum Sands under-21 men's surfboat crew is ready to tackle today.

Chasing the Australian title at the nationals at Kurrawa this week, the State champions are bracing themselves for huge seas generated by Cyclone Wati.

"We're hoping that the seas keep dropping ? that's the fore- cast anyway,'' said sweep Tony Davis after battling the rough con- ditions in training yesterday morning.

Davis will be joined by Jason Bedford, Matt Bellert, Joel Sher- wood and Shannon Chynoweth when qualifying starts today for Sunday's finals.

After winning this month's State title and Australian open events, the Tannum crew is chas- ing a rare treble.

With yesterday's masters com- petition moved to North Kirra, Da- vis said conditions could be a vital part in a strong under-21 men's surf boat field.

"It brings everyone back to the playing field,'' he said. "If you get whacked you could be sitting there back on the beach, watching.
