Teliah manages to blitz her caring mum
TELIAH Cunningham never gave up on trying to get her mother and eight siblings a Backyard Blitz garden.
You can see the results yourself on WIN Television's Backyard Blitz program tomorrow night at 7.30pm.
When Michelle and husband Richard returned to their Agnes Water home after a short break in February there was a fenced in-ground pool, a huge cubbyhouse equipped with a large flat screen TV, a DVD player and sound box, a refrigerator and a futon bed (among other things).
There was also extensive landscaping of the backyard including a BMX track.
Teliah, 15, said she wrote to the program 16 times over a six month period before she got a response.
It told producers how her parents were fostering five children while still caring for four of their own, all of whom were between four and 19 years of age.
"Mum enjoys the Backyard Blitz program and often said she would just love to have a place she could go to in the garden to be alone for a little while,'' Teliah said.
"One day I got the energy to write to Backyard Blitz telling them of our situation.
"One of the producers said she cried when she read the letter.''
Michelle said she was proud of her daughter and all her children.
"When Anglicare rang me up to tell us there were five children from the same family needing a home, I told them that this was a decision our whole family had to make,'' she said.
"Next day I rang Anglicare to say the family would be happy to take the five children.''
She said Richard tricked her into going away while the team performed magic on the 4.5 acre garden.
Michelle said a number of local people helped the Backyard Blitz team.
The work on the garden took three days to complete. Anglicare foster care will support 100 vulnerable children and young people in the Rockhampton region and 80 vulnerable children and young people in the Gladstone region this year.
They urgently need carers. Phone 4927 8200 or visit www.anglicarecq.org.au for more information.
