The groom got into punch-up
GREG Elliott is probably never going to forget his wedding anniversary, but not just because he married the love of his life.
The 35-year-old Zilzie man yesterday pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court to assaulting one of his wedding guests.
The court heard that on March 26 at a wedding reception at Emu Park the bridegroom, Elliott, had punched and kicked a 35-year-old wedding guest after the guest had already had a punch-up with a groomsman.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Brian Smith said the complainant was dancing with the wife of one of the groomsmen before the first incident. "The husband had then punched him,'' he said.
After the first punch-up the wedding guest came back.
"The complainant then was seen returning with a carving knife which was to be used to cut the cake,'' he said. "The defendant was then heard to have said ? 'You've ruined my wedding'.''
Representing himself, Elliott expressed his remorse.
"I shouldn't have got involved. It was my wedding day. He had been harassing my groomsman's wife all night and when my groomsman hit him I thought that would be it. But when he came back with a knife I saw red.''
Magistrate Annette Hennessy fined Elliot $500. No conviction was recorded.
