These plumbers are best in Queensland

CAREER changes for two apprentice plumbers are flowing pretty smoothly after the Rockhampton pair were recognised as the best in the state.

Steven Toon, 28, is the Second Year Apprentice of the Year and Mark Richards, 35, the Fourth Year Apprentice of the Year after taking out titles at the Plumbing Industry Awards in Brisbane.

Mr Toon, who only entered the awards on the final day of nominations, said he was "stunned and shocked'' by his win.

The former warehouse manager said he had turned to plumbing after laying some pipes for a construction firm.

"That's what got me interested,'' the Neil Jones Pty Ltd employee, said.

Mr Richards was already working in the industry as a plumbing store manager when he decided to take the step to an apprenticeship.

The Rod Balderston Plumbing employee said more money was his main motivation.

And the win was a particularly nice bonus.
