Traficante in fresh start
ROCKHAMPTON basketballer Chantelle Traficante is fighting back from illness and launching into a fresh start.
Traficante, 18, returned to Rockhampton Cyclones women's team training on the weekend at Hegvold Stadium ? it was the first exercise she had done in six months.
"I'm so excited ? it's ridiculous,'' she said.
Only two months ago she was diagnosed with Graves disease ? a disease that causes overactivity of the thyroid gland.
"My body's running at two to three times faster than it should be,'' Traficante said.
Traficante is now waiting to start treatment for the disease and in the meantime is frequently taking tablets to help stabilise her system.
It was a tough decision for Traficante to seek answers.
"I didn't want to know what this disease could do to me, I just wanted to get up and run the next day,'' she said.
Now diagnosed, Traficante is ready to go "all out''.
"I'm still sure I have the skills, but fitness is lacking.''
Traficante admits her basketball passion went missing last year, her first year out of school changing her focus.
"I'm keen this year ? I want to be fit and to be fit is to be healthy,'' he said.
The Cyclones have sprint training yesterday and again tomorrow before resuming court training on Sunday.
