Troy opens the $600 gift of a lifetime

AFTER spending more than $600 on a mystery Christmas present, in an eBay auction, you couldn't blame Troy Rann, 30, for being a little anxious to unwrap it.

But after receiving the present late last week the Moura man somehow found the willpower to wait until yesterday to open it. When he finally did, he did it in style ? live in front of the nation on Channel 9's Today.

And despite friends' predictions on the contents of the present ranging from Mercedes Benz keys to lingerie, the gift turned out to be something fairly mundane: A wind chime.

If anyone expected Mr Rann to be disappointed they were sorely mistaken.

"Was it worth it? Absolutely! I've had a story on page 2 of The Bully, been on national TV and I have a story that will last me a life time,'' he said. "It's not a Mercedes Benz but it's not a box of hankies either.''

The present was auctioned on eBay by a UK couple on Christmas day who promised to give the money to charity.

They said the present had been given to them by someone they did not want a gift from and had no idea what lay beneath the wrapping.

Mr Rann heard about the present on the Today show and decided he wanted it, placing a 262-pound bid. He said channel 9 representatives were initially a little concerned about the contents of the present and had asked to open it ahead of time.

He refused and the gift was opened for the first time during a link-up between Mr Rann in Rockhampton and host Karl Stefanovic in Sydney.
