Veterans at tennis for Qld

THE tennis action is heating up across Australia, but a group of Rockhampton veterans tennis players is ready to serve up some grass court tennis action across the Tasman.

They are hitting off the new year at the Australasian Veterans Teams Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand, from January 9-13.

Joining the Rockhampton assault are Cameron James (40s), Keith Johnson (50s), Des Campbell (50s), Wayne White (60s) and Pat Hayes (70s).

James, Campbell and Hayes are captains of their respective Queensland teams.

White is making his Queensland team debut.

Campbell said the biggest test will be playing on real grass.

"Getting used to the different bounce will be hard, with the ball keeping down lower,'' Campbell said.

"We'll have to play a more attacking game and come to the net more with the uneven bounce.''

The group has been making good use of James' backyard tennis court in the lead-up.
