Vicki fires a volley back
VICKI Bastin-Byrne is demanding tougher slingshot restrictions after a rash of vandalised windows in the Rockhampton area.
Over the weekend more than 12 businesses' windows were hit by vandals cruising around town with a slingshot.
Ms Bastin-Byrne's business, Dew's, located on Canning Street, was among those vandalised.
One of the bay windows in her shop front was broken and will cost more than $1000 to replace.
"Something has to be done,'' she said.
"Anyone can buy a slingshot without a permit.''
She said she called Member for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten's office yesterday wanting changes to the State law.
"For now I'm just asking shop keepers not to sell these slingshots,'' she said.
"Have some compassion for us and stop selling them.''
The police too are planning on speaking to weapon shop owners about restricting sales of slingshots.
But Sergeant Greg Price said restrictions would not completely deter vandals.
"Anyone can make them,'' he said.
"It will help though if they are restricted.''
He also said offenders had been mainly targeting shop fronts with large bay windows, in isolated areas.
