We're among the best - bump for bump

WHEN it comes to parking collisions, Rockhampton drivers are among the best in the State, new research has shown.

Conducted by NRMA Insurance and based on the company's claims data, the research showed Rockhampton was not among the 12 worst centres in Queensland for parking bingles.

Furthermore, the city had the equal third best ranking of regional centres, with 19% of all collisions parking related.

Only Ipswich (18%) and Townsville (15%) fared better.

Insurance Australia Group spokeswoman Susan Hawkins said Rocky rated well compared to other centres.

"Some of the contributing factors may be that Rockhampton doesn't have as many major shopping complexes, where typically, parking bingles occur,'' she said.

However Carol Andersen, supervisor of Northline Trolley Services which operates at Stockland Rockhampton, Northside Plaza, Kmart and City Centre Plaza, does not agree.

She said she was surprised at the findings.

"I've been doing this since '93 and things have gotten worse, much worse,'' she said.

"I'm bringing in one or more shopping trolleys a day that have been hit by cars.

"90% of people don't return them to trolley bays.''

In a previous NRMA survey of driver attitudes towards speeding, Rockhampton motorists demonstrated a greater willingness to comply with the law.
