Whittaker covets welterweight win
ROCKHAMPTON PCYC boxer Joe Whittaker is on a mission to make a name for himself in Brisbane tomorrow night.
Whittaker will fight Toowoomba's Craig "The Mongrel'' Monagle at the Brisbane Convention Centre in a welterweight bout leading into the main fight between Toowoomba's "Trojan Warrior'' Michael "Rocky'' Katsidis and the "Aussie Destroyer'' Ranee Ganoy.
The Rockhampton boxer will simply be known as Joe Whittaker over his bout of four by threeminute rounds.
However, trainer Des Upton has complete faith in his experienced fighter.
"He's strong in every department, he hits hard and he's quick ? he should win,'' Upton said.
Whittaker earned a start through his past amateur boxing day connections with Katsidis' manager Brendon Smith. The Blackwater PCYC team leave for Brisbane this morning and weigh-in this afternoon.
Katsidis will place his world number two ranking and World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Asia Pacific title on the line against the WBF Asia Pacific Champion from the Philippines. Both boxers have 17 wins each against their names.
