Winners all round at Yeppoon races

By DARRYN NUFER ? A PUNTER entering Keppel Park yesterday was on a winner even before the first race when he said: "I can't remember seeing a bigger crowd at the Yeppoon races.''

His intuition proved spot on when Yeppoon Turf Club president Greg Simpson later confirmed a crowd of more than 2000 ? a figure he said had not been achieved since the track opened in 1981.

Some 41 horses were declared runners, vindicating the necessity of racing on the well-appointed track where only two race meetings are allocated annually.

Politics aside, it was a good day for punters, especially those who jumped from trees to back Koala into $1.90 favourite in the feature race.

The John Wigginton-trained Koala, a last-start Thangool winner, scored by half a length in the Yeppoon Cup (1400m) over Mycenae ($4.40) with Compete ($8) third.

Once again talented jockey Ricky Barone, who rode a double for Wigginton at Callaghan Park last week, was in the saddle.

Other race winners were Alliebert ($6), Spectacular Frisco ($3.50), Old Gold For Me ($4) and Pamela Jean ($2).
