Woman raped on Rockhampton's Fitzroy Bridge

A HOMELESS man used a pair of scissors to threaten a woman as he sexually assaulted her in Rockhampton at the weekend.

The woman, 22, of Parkhurst, had been walking across the Fitzroy Bridge about 8pm on Saturday.

The homeless man, 23, had followed her down the stairs which lead from the bridge to Reaney Street, Berserker, allegedly grabbing her and forcing her to the ground.

It is then alleged that the man sexually assaulted the woman while threatening her with the scissors.

The woman then managed to escape and ran along the bridge before being picked up by police.

She suffered minor injuries in the attack.

The homeless man has been charged with one count of assault with intent to commit rape and two counts of sexual assault whilst armed.

Rockhampton CIB Detective Sergeant Steve Paskin said the alleged offender was located near the scene of the crime within half an hour of the complaint being made.

It is not believed he was known to the victim.

Rockhampton CIB acting officer-in-charge Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Broadfoot praised police for apprehending the alleged perpetrator quickly.

"It was excellent work on the behalf of the arresting officers,'' he said.

The alleged offender is due to appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court today.
