Yeppoon rolls to early lead

YEPPOON has grabbed the upper hand in the early stages of this year's Central Queensland Pennants croquet competition.

However, the Yeppoon players will closely watch this Saturday's play when Rockhampton travels to Gracemere and Gladstone competes in Mackay.

The final round is on May 22 when Mackay travel south to play Yeppoon and Rockhampton.

However, it is Yeppoon who has started on the right foot after a tight win over Rockhampton last weekend.

Rockhampton's Greg Whymark and Averil Gabriel won the first doubles rubber over Yeppoon's Budd and Lew Fitchen before Yeppoon's Barbara Fitchen and Stan "Legs'' Butcher hit back with a win over Ethel Hughes and May Feddersen.

The singles also resulted in two wins each with victories to Yeppoon's Lew Fitchen and Butcher while Gabriel and Hughes were winners for Rockhampton.

A countback was required before Yeppoon won with three games and 89 points to Rockhampton's three games and 67 points.
