Army to set up field hospital in Stockland carpark

AN ARMY field hospital is being set up in the Stockland carpark this afternoon to cope with the increasing strain on Rockhampton Hospital.

Mandalay Medical Centre suffered severe water damage from Cyclone Marcia and with its 15 doctors out of action, the hospital's emergency department now has a six-hour waiting time.

The hospital is dealing with cases of gastro and food poisoning from spoiled food and infections from injuries cuts from the clean-up.

Pharmacist and owner of Terry White Chemists in Rockhampton, Brendan Reck built the Mandalay Medical Centre and said there was also a backlog of patients with pre-existing or chronic illnesses who hadn't been seen since last week.

"People have lost prescriptions, have no refrigeration for medications…we just need to get primary care back to where it should be," he said.

The army will begin setting up the field hospital this afternoon.

It will be operational tomorrow, staffed with 15 doctors and offer the same services as Mandalay Medical Centre.
